Flooding Damages, Shuts Down IN Fire Station

June 24, 2021
Severe flooding over the weekend left the Bloomington Fire Department's downtown station uninhabitable, causing damage to the communication and electrical systems.

Recent severe flooding has temporarily shut down an Indiana fire station

The extreme weekend weather caused floodwaters to fill the basement and part of the first floor of Bloomington Fire Department's downtown station, the city said. Although the damage is still being assessed, the water degraded the station's communication and electrical systems, including controls for the back-up generator, which made the firehouse uninhabitable.

It's not clear how long the station, which also is the department's headquarters, will be closed, but an initial assessment confirmed that the firehouse would be shut down for some time while it's repaired. In the meantime, firefighters, apparatus and equipment housed at the station will be relocated to other stations.

“We will continue to provide the residents of Bloomington with exceptional fire fighting despite this setback," Chief Jason Moore said. "Our firefighters are doing what they do best -- sticking together and working through difficult situations to keep our city safe.”
